Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Cameroon are regulated by the 1992 "Labour Code Law No.92/007" and the "Loi N°73/5 du 7 décembre 1973 fixant le régimes des fêtes légales en République Unie du Cameroun", as amended in 1976.  Religious Holidays: After decolonization, Cameroon counted many more religious public holidays. But, in the 1960's, to reduce the total number of public holidays, the government let each faith choose 2 holidays. Catholics, represented by Mgr Jean Zoa chose Good Friday and Assumption. Protestants, represented by Reverend Moubitang chose Christmas and Easter. Muslims, for their part, chose Eid al Ftir (End of Ramadan) and Eid al Adha (Tabaski).  International Women's Day (March 8) has recently become a, de facto, un-official, public holiday in Cameroon with public and private institutions closing for the day, as well as many schools telling children not to bother to come to school .  National Mourning Days: by regulation and tradition, days of national mourning are only public holidays if they are accompanied by a "national hommage", which usually means a State Funeral attended by the President and members of the Government. This was the case in August 1986 and February 1998, but not in the May 2007, day of mourning for the victimns of the Kenyan Airlines crash (although reports indicate that there was widespread absenteeism on that day in both the private and public sectors).  Unification Day (October 1) is listed in a few online sources as a public hoiliday, but there are no trustworthy sources to corroborate this.  Cameroon International Codes CM and CMR (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .cm (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Cameroon information and news: Bank of Central African States (Cameroon central bank), UnitedHealthcare Global (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Cameroon maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Cameroon), and Wikipedia (includes Cameroon commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).

Religion of Specific Business Contacts : Some of the business contacts that you may be trying to meet in Cameroon, may belong to a religious group that is not common in Cameroon, and therefore which is not included in the above list of public holidays or bank holidays. To be safe, you should also verify that no major religious holidays coincides with any planned business trip to Cameroon.

**

Religious Holidays : Public holidays in Cameroon that are based on certain religious calendars may be subject to local variations due to differing interpretations between different religious authorities, or to seemingly arbitrary changes in the date a holiday is celebrated because it conflicts with another holiday that is based on another calendar, or because the day of the holiday is deemed inauspicious (bad luck). To find out more about these uncertainties, see the footnote below, if any, for each specific religion.

Muslim Holidays : Muslim bank holidays, legal holidays and public holidays for Cameroon were evaluated using the Umm al-Qura Calendar of Saudi Arabia which is used in Saudi Arabia and in most of the Persian Gulf States. Holidays may occur a day later in countries outside the Gulf region. The sunrises, sunsets, moon phases, moonrises and moonsets used in these calculations are based on the location of Mecca (latitude 21.42°N, longitude, 39.82°E, GMT+3 hours, no summer time rules).
