  • Peru Extends 2025 Public Holidays

    The Peruvian government has gazetted the Supreme Decree 042-2025 PCM which expands the list of 2025 public holidays in Peru, with the declaration of 3 additional one-off bridge public holidays.

    As per the aforementioned decree, signed by President Dina Boluarte , Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzén, and the Ministers of Labor, Foreign Trade, and Tourism, "The Government implements strategic policies to promote the country's tourist attractions, including the establishment of non-working days subject to compensation or recovery of non-worked hours. These, combined with regular holidays, create long weekends conducive to domestic tourism".

    Recall that, at the beginning of 2024, the Peruvian government had gazetted the Decreto Supremo Nº 011-2024-PCM which expanded the list of public holidays in Peru for the calendar year 2024.

    Then, in July 2024, it gazetted the Supreme Decree 066-2024-PCM which expanded the list of public holidays in Peru for the calendar year 2025, once again, with the declaration of an additional public sector holiday on Saturday, July 27, 2024 ("Artículo 1.- Día no laborable en el sector público, 1.1 Declarar día no laborable, para los trabajadores del sector público, a nivel nacional, el sábado 27 de julio de 2024").

    The Peruvian government has gazetted the Supreme Decree 042-2025 PCM which expands the list of 2025 public holidays in Peru, with the declaration of 3 additional one-off bridge public holidays.

    The Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Republic of Azerbaijan has reminded the population of the non-working public holidays in June 2025.

    These will be Gurban Bayram, from June 6-9, the Day of National Salvation on June 15-16, and the Day of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan on June 26, 2025.

    The Directive No. 048-MIDEPLAN-MTSS, signed by President Rodrigo Chaves Robles, the Minister of National Planning and Economic Policy, Marta Esquivel Rodríguez, and the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Andrés Romero Rodríguez, was published earlier today in La Gaceta, and it applies to all ministries, affiliated bodies, and autonomous and semi-autonomous state institutions.

    As per the aforementioned directive, Monday to Wednesday, April 14-16, 2025, have been granted as additional public sector holidays for Costa Rica's public servants.

  • Turkey's President Proposes March 21 Public Holiday

    The Turkish ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) has initiated the legislative process to declare March 21 as a new annual official public holiday in Türkiye under the name Nowruz Holiday.

    Recall that, last month, Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, speaking at the March 21 Nowruz Day Commemoration Program held at the Haliç Congress Center, had proposed that March 21st be declared a new annual public holiday in Turkey.

    The last annual public holiday added to Turkey's list of public holidays was in the autumn of 2016, when the same President Erdogan announced that, from 2017 onward, July 15 would be observed as a new non-working public holiday in Turkey to recall the aborted coup of the summer of 2016, and Turkey's Parliament unanimously passed a bill to declare July 15 as a new annual non-working public holiday in Turkey, named Democracy and National Solidarity Day.

    Before that, in 2009, Turkey's parliament approved a bill declaring May 1st an annual public holiday, effective starting in 2009, and giving it the official name Labor and Solidarity Day, following the preceding decision by then Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had ordered the Minister of Employment and Social Security to announce May 1st as a public holiday, earlier that same month. May 1st had been a public holiday in Turkey, called Spring Day from 1935 to 1980.

    The Minister of Labor of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (RDC), Ephraim Akwakwa Nametu, has issued the communique No.002/CAB/MIN.ET/EAN/JDO/04/2025 declaring Saturday, April 5, 2025, as a day in lieu public holiday due to the Simon Kimbangu public holiday of April 6 falling on a Sunday in 2025 ("Le Ministère de l’Emploi, et Travail porte à la connaissance du Public en général et des Organisations Professionnelles d’Employeurs et de Travailleurs en particulier, qu'aux termes de l'Ordonnance n°23/042 du 30 mars 2023 fixant la liste de jours fériés légaux en République Démocratique du Congo, la journée du 06 avril 2025, consacrée au combat de Simon KIMBANGU et à la conscience africaine, tombant le dimanche, la journée précédente du samedi 05 avril 2025 est déclarée chômée et payée sur toute l'étendue du Territoire National.").

    The aforementioned communique goes on to remind the public sector that, following its July 1st, 2024, transition to to la semaine anglaise (ie. Monday-Friday workweek), Friday, April 4, 2025, would be a public sector holiday ("S’agissant des services publics, la journée du vendredi 04 avril 2025 est déclarée chômée et payée conformément à l’article 1er du Décret n° 24/09 du 17 février 2024 portant règlement d’administration relative à la discipline.").

  • Honduras Announces Easter 2025 Public Sector Holidays

    The Ministry of the Interior, Justice and Decentralization of Honduras has issued an official communique confirming that all public sector officials and employees will enjoy additional public holidays from Tuesday to Saturday, April 15-19, 2025, on account of the upcoming semana santa (Easter week).

    As per the aforementioned communique, "First: According to the Civic Calendar, the month of April includes two commemorative dates: the Day of the Americas on April 14th, and the 17th and 18th of April of this year, Good Thursday and Good Friday. Both events fall in the same week", then "Second: Pursuant to this, it has been decided to grant all civil servants and employees of the Public Administration vacation time on Tuesday, April 15 and Wednesday, April 16 of this year, who must return to work on Monday, April 21", and finally "Third: In the case of the private sector, in response to various requests from some of the country's productive and tourism sectors, the holiday has been moved from Monday, April 14th to Monday, April 21st".

    Recall that, last week, the Honduran Council of Private Enterprise (Cohep) announced that for the private sector, the upcoming Easter Week public holidays would be from Maundy Thursday (April 17) to the Day of the Americas (which is now moved to Monday, April 21, 2025, for the private sector), with workers expected to return to work on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

    In the past, a half-day public holiday was afforded to the private sector of Honduras on Easter Week Wednesday, but this was not the case in 2024 and will not be the case either in 2025.

  • Jharkhand Extends Sarhul Public Holiday From This Year

    The Chief minister of the Government of India's state of Jharkhand, Hemant Soren, has announced that from this year onward there would be a 2-day state public holiday on the occasion of Sarhul.

    Recall that, last month, the Government of Jharkhand had similarly declared a public sector holiday on Saturday, March 15, 2025, on account of Holi, thus amending the list of 2025 public holidays in Jharkhand as set out in the Jharkhand vide notification No. 10/S.A -03-02/2024 of 6776 issued by the Governor of Jharkhand, last October.

    The Chief Secretary to the Government of India's State of Andhra Pradesh, K Vijayanand, has issued the vide notification G.O.Rt.No.637 declaring Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as an optional holiday following the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr on March 31.

    Recall that, in last month's vide notifications G.O.RT. No.1032 and No.1033, specifying its list of bank holidays, government holidays and public holidays in Andhra Pradesh for the calendar year 2025, only March 31st was listed as a public holiday.
