Ghana To Add Second Eid al- Fitr Public Holiday Ghana News Agency (Accra) The recently reelected President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has announced that he intended to make good on his election promise of adding a second annual public holiday for the Eid al-Fitr (End of Ramadan). As per the aforementioned announcement, "As part of our promises, we assured the Muslim community of adding one more holiday to the Eid al-Fitr celebrations. Once Parliament resumes, we will amend the Holidays Act to officially recognize an additional day for the Sallah festivities". President Mahama assured the public, during a National Muslim Prayer and Thanksgiving event at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra, that the necessary legislative amendments would be fast-tracked to ensure the change is implemented within the year. Recall that, in late 2023, Ghana MP Francis-Xavier Sosu had introduced two bills to amend the Public Holidays Act 2001, Act 601, with the declaration of 2 additional annual Muslim public holidays in Ghana, namely Tashreeq (the day after the Feast of Sacrifice public holiday) and Shaqq (the day before the End of Ramadan public holiday). But this bill, like many others, died in committee. Then, in late 2023, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential candidate, and former President, John Dramani Mahama, promised that an additional Muslim public holiday would be added to the annual list of public holidays in Ghana, if the NDC won the next elections ("If Insha-Allah we are voted into office, we will add an additional holiday to the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration."). Note, however, that in that same statement, the presidential candidate went on to add that "we are going to do this by reconfiguring the Public Holiday Act so that Ghana maintains the same number of public holidays per year so that we do not affect productivity", a detail that seems to be omitted in today's announcement. In early April 2024, presidential candidate Mahama reiterated his promise adding that "Ramadan takes a toll on Muslims and the additional holiday will give them a rest and enable them to regain their strength and contribute productively to the development of the country". John Dramani Mahama won the December 7, 2024, presidential election and was inaugurated on January 7, 2025.

But, this all changed beginning in late December 2021, when the Government of Peru published Law No. 31381, which declared December 9 as a new annual national public holiday commemorating the Battle of Ayacuchoas, effective in 2022. Then, in the summer of 2022, an August 6 public holiday for the Battle of Junín was added effective immediately in 2022. In early July 2023, a July 23 public holiday for the Día de la Fuerza Aérea del Perú was added effective immediately in 2023. And, finally, in June 2023, a June 7 public holiday for the Battle of Arica / Flag Day was added effective in 2024.

But it is also important to listen to the workers. So this is probably an issue that the National Labor Council will also have to deal with, so I will propose this agenda at the next session and hopefully it will be accepted"). And, as usual, the dates of Muslim public holidays listed by Bahrain's Central Bank are debatable, leading us to keep our forecast of the Ashoora 2025 public holidays for the moment (and a choice that was validated in today's announcement).
