09 Oct 2009 (Sofia News Agency-Novinite) Bulgaria's Parliament has voted against a proposal to declare August 23 as an annual national public holiday and non-working day. • 10 Sep 2009 (Sofia Echo-Sofia) The government of Bulgaria has announced that Monday, September 21, 2009, would be a one-off bridge public holiday, linking the weekend to the September 22, Independence Day public holiday. • 28 May 2009 (Bulgarian News Network-BNN) The Bulgarian Cabinet has declared a national day of mourning, tomorrow, Friday, May 29th, 2009, following an accident in southern Bulgaria, where 16 people were mowed by a bus, earlier today. • 22 Apr 2009 (FOCUS News Agency-Sofia) The mayor of Bulgaria's capital, Sofia, and unofficial GERB party leader, Boyko Borisov, promised to declare Good Friday as an official public holiday in Bulgaria, should his party win the upcoming June 14 parliamentary elections. • 20 Apr 2009 (Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bulgaria-Sofia) The Bulgarian Council of Ministers has announced a changed in the details of the upcoming, early May, 6-day public holidays. The compensating Saturdays that will need to be worked are now May 16 and May 30, 2009. • 19 Feb 2009 (Sofia Echo-Sofia) Bulgaria's Labour and Social Policy Minister, Emilia Maslarova, announced that at today's Cabinet session, it was decided to declare May 4 and May 5, 2009, as official public holidays, thus creating a 6-day public holiday stretching from May Day to St George's Day on May 6. • 12 Feb 2009 (The Sofia Echo-Sofia) At today's cabinet meeting, the government of Bulgaria announced a bridge public holiday for March 2, 2009. Governing Law: Official public holidays in Bulgaria are regulated by the Labour Code of Bulgaria, as amended in 1992 by decree 81 (to allow non-Orthodox to take public holidays according to their religion) and decree 262 (to add November 1st as a holiday in all educational institutions). • Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date, such as the following Monday, for example). • Bulgaria started to officially declare Bridge Holidays in 2007. To make up for these extra public holidays, there are designated specific Working Saturdays. • 2007 Working Saturdays: April 21, June 2, September 15, December 15, • Liberation Day is Bulgaria's National Day and commemorates the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman rule in 1878. During communist occupation, it was celebrated once in 1978, and it bacame the national day following a resolution of the Parliament passed on 5 March 1990 . • The Second Day of Christmas is neither Boxing Day nor Saint Stephen's Day but rather one of the public holidays left over from the communist era. They would celebrate this day after since they weren't allowed to celebrate Christmas itself. It is needless to say that they didn't give it up. • Revival Leaders' Day or Enlightenment Leaders Day is one of the national public holidays, but only schools and universities close (banks, businesses, and the government are open). • Days of National Mourning: Bulgaria has a tradition of declaring public holidays of national mourning when major industrial or traffic accidents occur.
