Background Information

Kasone Full Moon commemorates Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and passing.  Kayin New Year (also known as Karen New Year): Note that because the date of Kayin New Year is based on the phases of the Moon, there are Gregorian calendar years when no Kayin New Year is celebrated and there are some Gregorian calendar years when it is celebrated twice.  Myanmar International Codes MM and MMR (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .mm (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Myanmar information and news: UnitedHealthcare Global (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Myanmar maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Myanmar), and Wikipedia (includes Myanmar commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).

Footnotes
*

Observance : Any entry in the Observance column indicates that, in Myanmar, the holiday may be regional or non-official or limited to certain religious and/or linguistic groups, or begin at a time other than midnight. Note that religious holidays are included only if they are national public holidays, or if the national labour code has specific holiday allowances for employees of specific religions.

**

Religious Holidays : Public holidays in Myanmar that are based on certain religious calendars may be subject to local variations due to differing interpretations between different religious authorities, or to seemingly arbitrary changes in the date a holiday is celebrated because it conflicts with another holiday that is based on another calendar, or because the day of the holiday is deemed inauspicious (bad luck). To find out more about these uncertainties, see the footnote below, if any, for each specific religion.

Burmese and Arakanese Calendars Public Holidays : The rules used to predict traditional lunar public holidays in Myanmar are based on the models described in the book "The Calendrical Systems of Mainland South-East Asia", by J.C. Eade, published as part of the "Handbuch der Orientalistik" series (with help by Pr. by J.C. Eade and Dr. Burghart Hoffrichter), and on the classical 1901 book "The Burmese Calendar" by A.M.B. Irwin, the 1909 book "The Burmese and Arakanese Calendars" by A.M.B. Irwin, as well as the 1997 articles in the Indian Journal of History of Science by G.K. Chatterjee.
