Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Papua New Guinea are regulated by the Employment Act No. 54 of 1978 which refers for the list of public holidays to the Public Holidays Act 1953 (Chapter 321 of the Consolidated Legislation of Papua New Guinea).  Sunday Public Holidays: Section 1 (2) of the Public Holidays Act stipulates that when any of the public holidays falls on a Sunday, the next day, Monday, shall be declared a public holiday. This is slightly altered for Christmas Day (see below).  Saturday Public Holidays: Although, public holidays occurring on a Saturday are not officially supposed to move to the next Monday, there have been recent cases when this was done, and in some cases, this was announced only 2 days before the actual public holiday .  Although Christmas Day is always celebrated on Dec. 25th, the public holiday or "day off" from work takes place on Tuesday, Dec. 27 when Dec. 25 is a Sunday. Monday the 26th, Boxing Day, is already a public holiday.  Remembrance Day was moved from July 23 to April 25 for 2005 to be celebrated at the same time as ANZAC Day in Australia and New Zealand. It was later thought that Papua New Guinea should have its own day and that ANZAC Day was for Australia and New Zealand to celebrate.  Death of Leading Politicians: The death of leading politicians, active or retired, often results in the last-minute declaration of a national public holiday of mourning .  Papua New Guinea International Codes PG and PNG (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .pg (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Papua New Guinea information and news: Bank of Papua New Guinea (Papua New Guinea central bank), UnitedHealthcare Global (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Papua New Guinea maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Papua New Guinea), and Wikipedia (includes Papua New Guinea commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
